The origin of the Christmas tree, it is said, goes back to Celtic culture. For the Druids, the ancient Celtic priests, the fir tree was considered a symbol of a long life.
In our Alpine valleys, on the other hand, the Christmas tree is also a Christian symbol and the setting up of it has a long tradition.
Our ancestors, farmers and small landowners, were not too happy to sacrifice the young trees, part of their poor inheritance. Those who could afford to cut down a tree to put up at home decorated it with home-made biscuits, apples, colourful ribbons and nuts wrapped in foil. Later, wooden shapes and decorations made of natural materials were added.
