Rural artists beneath the Dolomites
Alta Badia, the art of savoir-faire
In Alta Badia, the origins of handicrafts date back to a time when the valley's first inhabitants evolved from nomadic hunters into farmers. The peasant families had to provide their own supplies: food but also yarn, fabrics, tools and the bare necessities for survival. That is why, especially in winter, when there was no work in the fields, many men travelled to nearby regions where they worked and earned a livelihood for their families. Being smart and creative, they quickly became very skilled and popular craftsmen - to the point that you can still buy handmade textiles, sculptures and wood crafts in today’s workshops and stores of Alta Badia.
