Festa dles Antles - The Festivity of Corpus Christi

sacher-coer-gonfalone

The Corpus Christi festivity, celebrated on the ninth Sunday after Easter, is one of the most important celebrations in the Catholic Church's liturgical year and has always been celebrated in Val Badia, as in all of South Tyrol, with a festive procession. Apart from its religious significance, the procession was also supposed to ward off evil and the devil, to protect against evil spirits and against storms.

On Corpus Christi, solemn processions took place and still take place today, during which procession banners and statues are carried. They identify the different groups of believers according to age, gender or membership of brotherhoods and associations.

A certain amount of physical fitness and strength is required to carry the banners. Therefore, especially for the young boys, it was and is a great honour and a reason to be proud.
